Moving… Once Again

It’s always so stressful thinking about moving. Yes, Brandon and I are moving once again for the 100th time this year! I can’t say there are more bad things than good things about this move but it’s a new chapter in our lives. I know I’m moving before I finish graduate school but the big thing here is, Brandon has a job!

Yes, he has a new job and it’s proving to be a very exciting thing because he needs to get off his butt and work. Brandon really enjoys working and it’s something he wants to do so I say, go for it! The only con in this whole equation is… *whispers* i don’t have a job. Yeah, I know for the 100th time, I’m moving without a job but this time the move is to a big city. Right now we live in Tucson, AZ and there’s nearly nothing here for work. The next place we move to is going to be our place for awhile. I know I say that each and every time but Brandon has already committed to at least a year stint at work so we should be ok for awhile.

With that out, I really really want to finish my literature review for school and right now it’s biting me in the butt because I have a lot of issues. My writing has become sloppy. Nobody wants to read sloppy work.  My decision of what to do with that is: I’m going to re-write each and every sentence. It didn’t come out the way I wanted so I’m kind of grumpy about it but I’m at least getting something done!  I also have a paper due tomorrow on a case study about Crosby Manufacturing Corporation. This will be my last project management course and then I’ll have an advanced certification in Project Management. Whooop!

Cottage Law

I recently received a magazine called Hobby Farm Home (The country living) from Emily as a christmas gift. I have a year subscription! The only unfortunate thing happening is that I have already received 2 of 6 magazines and it only makes me sad to know I won’t be getting many more but hey! I’m enjoying it while it lasts!!

After receiving it in the mail, I started reading immediately. The first thing that appealed to me was the front print saying, “Make and Sell Homemade Food without a commercial kitchen.” A commercial kitchen tends to be a lot more money and a lot of unnecessary expenses especially since we have a perfectly working kitchen in our house or apartment.

If I were to rent a commercial kitchen in Dallas, that’s easily 2-3 thousand dollars a month. I found a Restaurant space in Mesquite, Tx that’s going for “Only 5,000 a month.” I don’t think I could make 5,000 worth of sales in one month to pay for rent! Renting is often one of the biggest expenses but if you were to use your home kitchen for commercial purposes, you could do a tax write-off of the area in your home that you use for preparation of food since you’d be using it for work purposes. (more on that later)

So, of course this information is great but now, don’t we need to know if that’s legal in Texas? Not every state is the same so I looked to see if Texas participates in the Cottage Law and they do! This is new in 2011 so if you live in Texas and are just now finding this out, don’t worry it is a recent law so here you go: 82(R) SB 81

“Bakery products and some other foods like jams, jellies, dried herbs and spices, granola, popcorn, and candy, are considered low-risk for spoilage because they are not able to support the growth of potentially harmful organisms and do not require refrigeration.  These foods are known as non-potentially hazardous.” (Texas Cottage Food Law)

So, if you are interested in knowing more about what is considered a potentially hazardous dessert, here is the link.

Study of Scenario Planning

Part of my degree requires a lot of interesting classes and one of the classes I’m taking as an elective is called, “Strategic Procedures of Service Firms.” The course is mainly about understanding how current trends influence the future. Everything has to do with the future and part of being a service firm is understanding what your clients will want. Not only do you want to prepare your employees for the future but you want to have your products prepared and ready for the future.

Sometimes it requires scenario planning and that’s what we are studying. Scenario planning is when you look at possible results and use them to create scenarios. An example of a scenario would be that baby boomers are getting older and so therefore the health care industry will explode as they get older. This has already been predicted by many other people and that’s how the prediction of job market is placed, based on aspects that do not rely on other things to happen.

When something does not rely on something else it’s called a predetermined element. It’s an element that will occur no matter what we do unless we destroy the world. Another example of predetermined element would be population growth. It’s something that businesses look at and part of understanding what kind of services are going to be in demand or what kind of jobs we need to be creating for the future, is knowing what to do in preparation and in order to prepare for whatever the possible scenarios are, scenario planning needs to occur.

It’s a fascinating concept presented in “The Art of Long View.” The idea of scenario planning was established in WW2 by the US Air Force and in the 60′s became part of the business scene. All of this information I learned from one class and I look forward to learning more!

Useful Saturday

Today is Saturday and I usually loathe Saturdays, it’s a weird part of me that dislikes saturdays because mainly, it’s the weekend and nothing is open. It’s not so much stores and so forth but there are some specific things you can NOT get done on a saturday so blech. But today has been a very effective day!

I spent the morning getting the turkey ready. Eric had bought a turkey (I don’t know why but whatever) and blood got ALL over my fridge yesterday because he didn’t put anything under the turkey while it defrosted. Obviously it didn’t happen yesterday ONLY but that’s when I ended up having to spend about an hour cleaning the fridge because it got all over my fruit/vegetable tray as well so I had to throw everything out.

After yesterday, I decided I was to go ahead and cook the turkey but then we didn’t have a roasting pan so I had to ask Brandon’s sister if we could borrow hers. They use oven bags to cook their turkey, I just put foil on top the way my dad does it! Putting the turkey in the oven, I felt pretty proud of myself since I was able to get the giblets/gizzards out and the neck, put it in a pot and started simmering it with onions and chicken stock to make a nice stock for gravy! I love stock and I love gravy so it’s a great combination for me.

Before I was able to put the turkey in, Eric and Chuck, (the brother in law) arrived to put some stuff in a trailer. My in-laws had rented a trailer to get their tree cuttings to the dump. During this whole trip to Texas, I had picked up some stuff for Eric and 2/3 of the stuff we got for him got thrown out. Honestly, he would’ve done better if he had his storage unit auctioned off.

SO here I am, posting and it’s 9:45 in the morning. I have already gotten this done and on top of that, there was a hole in the wall, which Brandon ended up patching for Eric, that needed painting so I did that too. Brandon had refused to do it for Eric and I just wanted the kitchen to look halfway decent for when Eric has his big thing tomorrow night. At this point, I seriously doubt very many people are going to show up but that’s allright.

Be a Better Salesperson

Part of choosing what you want to spend your day doing is selling it to yourself. Often people think about salespeople as bad people but then again, they are one themselves. We sell things to everybody all the time. It doesn’t necessarily have to be an item but it can be an activity or even the way things are placed in your home.

Person A: Why do you want it that way
Person B: It looks better that way
Person A: It looks the same to me
Person B: Well with the chair over here, you can see the TV better and as you can see, the TV has been moved so it’s against the bigger wall rather than hanging by the door. The kids can’t run in and knock it over.
Person A: Ah, I didn’t think of it that way. I suppose this layout is better.

What just happend here? They had a conversation about moving furniture, it wasn’t about buying a new TV or anything tangible.  In the end Person B has persuaded person A to go along with the moving around of furniture and that it’s better for them because the TV can’t be knocked over by the children.

Why would we classify something like that as selling? Because  ”A sale is the act of selling a product or service in return for money or other compensation” Person A has compensated their permission to keep the layout the way Person B wants. Person B has done the act of selling ideas. Think of a gym membership. You are not getting anything tangible but you are getting an service or have been persuaded that the gym you are joining is better than other gyms. Maybe not necessarily better but the gym services more to your desires than the other gym because obviously you’ve chosen the gym you go to.

So, if you are a salesperson and struggling with sales, remember that the ability to market something is there, we just have to find it. That is why not everybody is made to be a salesperson, because not everybody can find it.

What triggered this post? My brother in law has joined some Independent business organization and his first month working, everybody was helping him out and getting him what he needed but now that he’s not so new anymore, people are leaving him to fend for himself. Here he is, reading books thinking they’re going to help him. Sure, they’ll help him find things about himself that he didn’t know but that’s not how you sell stuff. It’s critical to know your audience, know the product you’re selling, and know what you are doing. It’s not something that you can just read out of a book.

The best car dealer I found was here in Tucson. His name is Les Laws. Why would I pick him as one of the best dealers I’ve found. He knows how to appeal to people like me, knows how to appeal to the idea that I would rather have the truth than some big fat lie. Brandon’s dad worked in a car dealership so we know how the system works and here he is, telling us the truth. I’d rather have somebody sell the car to me that I know will be honest and trustworthy than somebody that’s going to try to kiss my butt about things. It’s not something I’m interested in. Other people might want something else.

OK so, If you are looking for a used car dealer and looking for somebody that will talk about all the cars and be honest about which cars he would want to sell you. But in the end share the excitement with you and know what you are looking for, go see Les Laws. He works at Quebedeaux Certified Used Car on Speedway. Tell him Mary sent you!
